Labia Rejuvenation Surgery in Naperville, IL

What is Labia Rejuvenation Surgery?

Labia Rejuvenation, also known as Labiaplasty, Labia Reduction, or Vaginal Lip Reduction, is a surgical procedure to improve the appearance and function of the external female genitalia. Labiaplasty, which can involve both the labia majora (outer vaginal lips) and the labia minora (inner vaginal lips), is done for two reasons:

  • Cosmetic surgery to improve the appearance of the labia minora and/or labia majora
  • Functional surgery to improve hygiene, and reduce irritation or discomfort during sex and other activities.

Labiaplasty for Cosmetic Reasons

Aesthetic Labiaplasty is performed to reduce the size of the labia and/or make them more symmetrical. Some women are born with enlarged labia, or develop them through childbirth or natural aging. Cosmetic surgery can help women feel less self-conscious about their external genitalia, and make it easier for them to become intimate with a sexual partner.

Labiaplasty to Improve Function

Enlarged labia can sometimes make intercourse painful. In addition, women with larger labia may experience discomfort while wearing tight clothing or during activities like riding a bicycle. Hygiene can also be a problem, such as toilet paper sticking in the labia. Functional Labiaplasty to reduce the size of the labia can make sex, and many other activities, more enjoyable, as well as improve a woman’s personal hygiene.

Who is a Candidate for Labioplasty?

Labioplasty can benefit women who are:

  • Seeking relief from painful sex due to irritation of the labia
  • Interested in improving the appearance of their external genitalia, as well as boosting their self-esteem
  • Suffering from poor hygiene, irritation while wearing tight-fitting clothing or discomfort during activities like bicycling due to enlarged labia.

About the Labioplasty Procedure

Labioplasty is performed by a vaginal reconstructive surgeon while under local anesthesia. This surgery, which takes between 1 and 2 hours, may be performed on one or both vaginal lips. Most women are able to go home on the day of the surgery.

Recovery

Pain and discomfort after a Labioplasty should be minimal. Your doctor will ask you to apply a topical antibiotic ointment for 48 hours, and will prescribe a several-day course of antibiotics to prevent infection.  It is normal for the labia to be somewhat swollen after the procedure due to anesthetic or fluid collecting in the labia. If you experience severe pain or swelling, call your doctor immediately, if you do not reach the office to go to the nearest Emergency room.

You doctor will schedule you for a follow-up examination the next day and one week later. You should be able to resume your normal activities after 3 to 4 days. However, in order to speed up healing you should avoid using tampons, wearing tight clothing or having sex for about 4 weeks after your surgery.

Results

Labioplasty can be very rewarding—reducing irritation of the labia, improving comfort during sex and boosting a woman’s self-esteem. In general, women are very satisfied with the results of this procedure, at least 90 percent of women in one study from 2000.
